Maranui SLSC's dedicated team of lifeguards patrol Wellington City beaches to ensure the safety of beach-users.
Our volunteer patrols run on weekend afternoons from late November to early March at either Oriental Bay or Lyall Bay.
Our lifeguards are also an integral part of our Junior Surf programme, keeping our kids safe in the water and acting as awesome role models.
Some of our guards are employed by SLSNZ across Wellington beaches on weekdays throughout the summer school holidays.
Over the 2023/24 season our lifeguards volunteered over 1100 hours on Wellington City beaches.
We encourage all members to consider training as a lifeguard, and joining our voluntary patrol teams.
To train to become a surf lifeguard, you will need to be 14 years or older, and able to complete a 400m pool swim in under 9 minutes.*
The training takes place during the winter and spring so that you can earn your Surf Lifeguard Award in time for summer. Every year we have rookies of all ages, it's never too late to learn something new!
The training covers the theory and practical elements of basic surf lifesaving. You will learn about the surf environment, rescue techniques, first aid and CPR skills, beach management, and using marine radios.
Once you are a qualified lifeguard, there are numerous opportunities available to you. See our membership pathways for more details.
Find out more about what the course covers and the examination process on the lifeguard award page of the SLSNZ website.
If you are not a strong swimmer, you might like to consider the Patrol Support award, this award gives you much of the same training as a lifeguard and allows you to join voluntary Lifeguard Patrols.
If you are interested in training as a lifeguard or patrol support email admin@maranui.co.nz.
