Oceans'17 - Mt Maunganui, Thurs 2 - Sun 5 March 2017
'Oceans' is the SLSNZ National Championships for 10-13 year old surf athletes. This is the pinnacle of the high performance aspect of Surf Lifesaving for this age of athletes. This event is held in late February each year at Mount Maunganui.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Maranui Athletes to showcase their skills on the National stage and gain confidence in their athletic abilities however it is not for everybody.
While all of our 10-13 year olds are eligible for this competition, we have to be comfortable that our chosen ocean athletes can handle the often challenging conditions at Mount Maunganui. Therefore specific criteria must be met, in order to be selected for this team:
- High attendance level at Junior Surf sessions.
- High attendance level at carnivals.
- Good results achieved in carnivals.
- Competent ocean swimmer in all conditions.
- Competent board paddler in all conditions.
- Enthusiastic and committed to Surf sports.
- Committed to train up to 4 times per week.
Places in the squad are limited so the above criteria will be used in order to select the best athletes.
In August a squad of Ocean athletes will be chosen based on their already proven abilities. (see criteria above) Pre season training will begin in September and will continue until the surf season begins. These early sessions we will focus on board paddling technique and general fitness. Athletes not chosen in the initial squad still have the whole season to show that they have the skills required to join the final team selected in early February (refer to the criteria above). These athletes can be added to the squad at any time.
Athletes taking part in the oceans event will be required to pay an additional fee to cover expenses plus be involved in fund raising activities to accommodate the team at the Mount.
Ocean Athletes are required to purchase Maranui SLSC Club togs.
