Maranui Nippers back in full swing (05/02/2012)

Back to school showed with Maranui Nippers returning to routine. Nippers at Maranui showed an increase in numbers getting back to norm of 100.

This proved to be quite a sight for visitor Ron Watt (President Maranui Swimming Club), who was very impressed with the organisation and parental support that Maranui SLSC Nippers had. He was visiting to talk to Club Captain (Marc Pulepule) about extending more time to Maranui during their sessions at Freyberg Pool.

Comment from onlookers: Dennis Thompson (Principal Lyall Bay School) from his home on Melrose said'...the sound of the kids screaming and laughing, the sight of all the kids from my place was just awesome...' '...you're obviously doing something good for these kids...'

Maranui SLSC supporting Aquatic Sports in the Habour (04/02/2012)

Wellington Habour festival was an opportunity for Maranui SLSC to showcase what it does for the community of Wellington.

Maranui had set up it's Maranui Tent on Freyberg beach to house a variety of activities for its display. First Aid equipment, paddle boards for demostration and to try, an IRB giving rides, information on its very successful Nipper programme and Lifeguarding service. The main objective for Maranui was to project and provide information to the Public about what the Club does and to promote a pathway for interested people.

Unfortunately this was the weekend of the Sevens and the weather was not great either so support from the Public was less than expected.

Maranui SLSC would like to thank Dave Wells, Jenny Everett-Wells and Marc Pulepule for being Club Ambassadors on Sat 4th Feb 2012.

According to organisers, there is to be another event planned before the end of the summer.

Maranui performs a rescue on first day of season 100(03/12/2011)

Maranui IRB roving patrol performs a rescue on the first day of patrol.

Divers exhausted from diving got into trouble while returning to shore. Maranui IRB roving patrol round to Island Bay picked them up and saw them to safely to shore.

Maranui IRB roving patrol was born from a Coastal Public safety report done in 2010. Maranui set this up as part of its address to meet recommendations from this report. The patrol has been in operation since last season. This has proved to be well worth it... Good show Maranui IRB roving patrol.

Jandal day (02/12/2011)

Maranui was out collecting today. Numbers was lower than in previous years but that didn't deter the ones that did turn up.

It has to be said; the weather was hot and the City was a buzz with people getting out  in it. People were in a generous mood and it is always good to know that people do support what we do. Thank you to everyone that gave to Surf Lifesaving.

A special thanks would have to go a tireless buzzy bee Jenny Everett-Wells; our Jandal Day Coordinator and of course, not forgetting our collectors.

irb twlight series feature Maranui irb crew(1/12/2011)

IRBTwilight

The twlight series kicked off at Lyall Bay beach with the top guns on display. Crews from Otaki, Maranui, Lyall Bay, Titahi Bay and Paekakariki showed bystanders what IRB can do. Conditions were not ideal but locals were treated to the roar of engines and the smell of petrol.

Representing Maranui Dave Wells and Henry Williams matched their skills with the top crews in the region. 3rd and 4th placings meant that there was still a lot of work to do.

Other crews gave tips to this inexperienced two for things to work on. That's the spirit....

Worser Bay Carnival, another success(27/11/2011)

Maranui would like to thank Worser Bay LSC for the fantastic work in organising this successful event. It is no doubt the best start to the season.

Maranui coaches and parent helpers featured in all arenas, a testatment to the structure of Nippers at Maranui. Maranui was able to provide IRB support and Surf Officials to aid Worser Bay LSC successful event.

Maranui promoting parental involvement

As part of Maranuis Surf Programme it promotes parental involvement through a hands on approach. Parental participation through becoming a Surf Coach helps their Nippers feel more comfortable about being in the water, dispel fears of being around water and generate an activity for the whole family to do.

On the 19th November 2011; Maranui sent 9 parents to Foxton SLSC to train to be Surf Coaches. Maranui would like to congratulate the following attaining their Surf Coach award.

Maranui Nippers turn out (20/11/2011)

Conditions on Maranui beach portray a typical Wellington day; but this did not deter Maranui Nippers; this week 105 Nippers turned out to learn about Surf Lifesaving.

What a hardy bunch of kids... Maranui Nippers are really starting to get to know that going to the beach is really fun in a safe environment. That going to the beach as a family is even more fun.

Year 2 and Year 3 kids are ready for the beach this summer(15/11/2011)

Maranui lifeguards,Jenny Everett-Wells and Marc Pulepule; took the time to talk to Lyall Bay School kids in Room 6 and 7 about 'what to do when you go to the beach this summer'.

A 15 min talk with heaps of props helped the kids of Lyall Bay School learn 3 simples rules.

1. Swim between the flags

2. Never swim alone

3. Listen to the Lifeguards

Maranui 100 and still growing strong

Maranui turned 100, 3rd October 2011.

About a 100 Clubbies and friends turned up to celebrate Maranui turning 100. Club President Jim Warwick introduced a low key proceedings and Patron George Gallagher gave a small histroical account to date of the Club; this meant that the real conversations and accounts of what really happen could start.

Maranui is not one for too many words; action speaks louder than words and so that's what happened, the cake came out to excited Nippers; cups of tea flowed and the room was a buzz with laughter, finger pointing and recognition of old friends.

Maranui Clubbies came from as far a field as Australia and the far North to be here for this great occassion. Mayor Celia Wade Brown was also there to help make Maranui 100th Birthday special. It was a meeting and greetings of generations that spanned the 100 years since Maranui formed.

Club Captain Marc Pulepule picture here with Mayor Celia Wade Brown and council members.

Maranui was nominated for two catagories and was overall winner in the catagory of Education and Child/ Youth Development. This is in recognition for the past 5 years of developing Nippers which has seen it swell to over 100 kids.

Chris Mark and his continual work with the Nipper programme should be mentioned as one of the principle reason for this award.

The other nomination was to do with the work that Maranui is doing towards being ready and prepared for a Tsunami in the Lyall Bay area. Maranui has been working on this for the past year fronting a campaign to being ready and prepared for a coastal hazard. The overall winner in this catagory of Health and Wellbeing was Wellington Free Ambulance.

Maranui Patrol Captain and partner on hand to save the day (12/09/2011)

The accident occurred near the corner of Willis and Manners Street. A woman crossing the road between  a van and a car was hit by an on coming vehicle.

The impact caused the victim to tumble over another vehicle to land on the road with her head under another car.  Blood was coming from the victims' head and limbs were in disarray.  Drivers of the vehicles involved were traumatised and in shock.

From their Florist Shop (Woodstock Florist) they witnessed the accident; Vanessa Procter and partner Maranui Patrol Captain Wayne Wickens reacted.

Assessing the situation as critical they were able to revive the unconscious patient and secure the area till help arrived.  Quick thinking and training in a critical situation saved the patient from further injury.

Emergency Medical Staff arrived and the victim was whisked away to hospital.

We understand that the victim has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Maranui show that they can mix it with the rest of them (10/09/2011)

90 Mile Classic IRB Race is in its 19th year. This is the first time that Maranui has entered an IRB Team.

There were crews from Clubs all over the North Island: Muriwai, Bethals beach, North Piha, Raglan, East End, Waimarama, Sunset, Manguwai Heads to name a few. We even had a crew from Del mar; California, America who came over specially for this race. Maranui was the southern most entry.

This is an endurance race; crews will be tested on their abilities in team work, mental toughness (metal), speed and strenght.

There are 4 stages with 4 Check points; at each Check point crews are required to perform tasks to earn a tag completing the stage. As crews register they draw a starting position. Maranui drew 9th position; photo count three boats for Maranui IRB 2; Scotts Point in background.

DSC00447.JPG

Le Mons start launched the Race; crews ran 200m to their boats, then dragged them 50m to water before starting their engines. Maranui started in the middle of the pack jostling for position.

Motupia Island

DSC00452.JPG

Check point 1: Motupia Island (The test of Team)

Crews land and then send a runner to collect their tag from Officials 150m away; then race around Motupia Island clockwise to return directly towards shore before heading off to next stage. Maranui left in the middle of the pack.

DSC00455.JPG

Checkpoint 2: The Bluff (The test of Metal)

Crews beach IRB then carry IRB over a spit 250m wide to launch on the other side of spit to the next stage. Crews must also refuel and collect their tag. Maranui caught up lots of crews here heading off in 6th but had to return forgetting to collect their tag. They lost 4 valuable places.

The return to collect the tag meant that fuel consumption was altered and an extra stop to refuel was required. Lucky they had a support crew on hand; Marc and Juilet.

Check point 3: Hukatere (The test of Speed)

Crews must send two runners to Hukatere hill to collect their tag. This is a 1.5 - 2km run. To recieve the tag they must be presented together before returning to the IRB. Meanwhile the other crew member refuels and makes adjustments and repairs before lauching for the next stage. Maranui left in 13th place.

Check point 4: Waipapakauri (The test of Strenght)

Crews must disconnect the engine from the hull and carry it around a flag set at the high tide mark; refuel and collect their tag. Maranui showed grit and determination to peg back another place and leave 12th overall.

The final leg was down to boat speed; Maranui IRB 2 showed it had plenty of this. It maintained speed for most of the way passing a struggling crew but ran into engine trouble breaking an engine clamp. With 3kms to go quick thinking and Maranui ingenuity meant that they finished 11th overall.

Maranui can mix it with the rest of them by being the highest placing newcomer in Race history.

Great work boys you have just set a mark to better.

Maranui Lifeguards recieve Hero Awards from the City of Wellington (06/09/2011).

January of this year; Patrol Team X Men PC (Marc Pulepule) was on patrol. Oriental Bay beach was cloudy and the wind was blowing out to sea. It was late in the afternoon when the roving team at Freyberg beach were called into action. Craig McGuinness responded to two young girls on a flotation device being blown out to sea. He swam out to rescue the two by taking them to the raft and then returning them to shore. The girls were shaken up but safe on land.

PC (Marc Pulepule) rotated the teams to have Craig placed on Oriental Bay beach; Almiro Clere was now roving at Freyberg beach. No sooner did Craig get to Oriental Bay beach when he was called to action again; this time a man carrying a beer bottle was tracked by PC (Marc Pulepule) heading out to the raft. His stroke was laboured and he was struggling to get to the raft at low tide. Craig was called to respond rescuing the drunk individual and returning him to shore. He was okay and recovered quickly to be told by PC (Marc Pulepule) that he was not to enter the water in his current state.

While this was happening at Oriental Bay beach; Almiro Clere, tracking a group of young school girls at the pier beside the Tug boat; noticed that one girl was struggling after leaping into the water off the pier. Assessing the situation as critical he responded by diving in after her and returning her to the pier ladder. He soon discovered that her laboured breathing was as a result of her having cystic fibrosis. Luckly parents of the individual were on hand with medicine to assist. No further intervention was required as she recovered soon after recieving her medication.

Their deeds were reported to the Dominion Post by bystanders but not recognised by SLSNZ at the time of the incident.

Last night our Maranui Lifeguards Craig McGuinness and Almiro Clere recieved recognition for saving an unprecedented 4 people in 1 hour on Oriental Bay beach.

Congratulations Craig and Almiro... below is the Mayor (Celia Wade Brown) presenting Craig McGuinness and Almiro Clere father with awards.

Maranui has entered into a collabration with WEMO (Wellington Emergency Management Office) to better use its resources to aid the Community of Lyall Bay, Kilbirnie, Island Bay,  Miramar and Strathmore in the event of a coastal hazard (e.g. Tsunami).

Preparedness and readiness is the aim for our area.

The Regional Awards saw a strong Maranui presence with 28 members attending to witness Maranui Junior Surf recieving Junior Surf Medals, surprise nomination Marc Pulepule Surf Instructor of the Year and Maranui SLSC recieving Innovation of the Year 2011.

Great organizational skills were on display as Maranui Club showed precision and the accuracy relative to the dismal weather conditions for all Surf competitors. Comment from other Surf Clubs on the condition of the beach rivaling National Champs. Flow of events was done with military precision and little disruption which meant that competitors had little time to wait for the next event.

Feedback from Surf Officials that attended said '... that it was obviously preplanned...' which showed in continuity of events and that the carnival took only 4 hours to completion. Great enthusiasm and parental support reflected the strong showing of Maranui Surf Athletes.

Throughout Maranuis’ Carnival, Maranui Surf Athletes were performing; both Boys and Girls 7-9 year old age group, Maranui featured in the top 5 in all events. In the 7- 14 year old age group had mixed results but Maranui Surf Athletes braved the conditions in togs to place and prove what a Hardy bunch they are.

An overall tone of this Carnival could best be summed up by how much fun the Carnival Announcer (Jason Reid) was having huddled up, snug and warm, in the sound box.

Congratulations to all our Maranui Junior Surf Athletes, keep it up...

On to the next calendar event; 12th and 13th of February Capital Coast Champs both Senior and Junior will be on display.

Maranui sends Maranui irb 1

Maranui sends Maranui IRB 1 to welcome the 6 lifeguards that are circumnavigating the whole of New Zealand in IRBs. Henry Williams, Jim Warwick and Marc Pulepule crewed Maranui IRB 1 with three other Surf Club IRBs to guide this crew into Lyall Bay at 7.45am in the morning of 30th January 2011.

They met the crew out in Cooks Strait about 10kms off shore and conveyed it back to Lyall Bay beach. Through undulating seas they encountered dolphins playing in their wake; as the sun rose media had gathered to greet this crew who were exhausted but glad to reach land.

 Maranui Nippers in action again

Capital Classic Kids 200m and 300m Ocean swim was held on 29th January in Oriental Bay, Wellington. In the 200m event Maranui was represented by Che Pulepule, Maxwell Wickens and Toby Mark recorded a 1st, 2nd and 4th placed males in the 6-10 year old age group. In a field of 39 kids they crossed the finish line in 4th, 7th and 11th respectively.

Che stopped the clock at 2.41 min.

In the 300m Ocean swim; 12 year old Tess Hindle-Daniels placed 7th, her time was 5.45min.

Well done to all our Nippers that competed, great results….

Riversdale Carnival  (22/01/11)

Riversdale Carnival has always been a great carnival for Maranui Nippers. This year the event was marred by high surf and strong weather conditions. The Carnival was called off early and a Fun Day took place for those who had already made accommodations at Riversdale. Ten families from Maranui were present; of these ten families three had made the trip over to take part. That’s dedication for you.

In pouring rain and cold conditions; Maranui Nippers braved the weather to register top in all events that they entered; Che Pulepule and Lucy Reid were our stand outs recording wins in beach flags, beach sprints, Run-wade-Run and Run-swim-Run. Weather conditions worsened but credit goes to Riversdale SLSC for hosting and looking after the Surf Clubs that were able to attend.

A big thank you goes to Wayne Wickens for ferrying our Nippers back and forth from Maranui HQ once they were cold or had had enough; and to the ladies of Maranui HQ for keeping the fires hot and the kids well feed after the Fun Day.

The Fun Day ended an hour and half later, which meant that the festivities could start a little early this year.

Patrolling on Oriental Bay

X-Men surprised

16/01/11 a patrol of four was posted on Oriental Bay beach; Marc Pulepule (PC). The day started with gusts up to 70km/hr but ended with four rescues and 150 visitors during peak time. Early intervention and early assessment helped to reduce response time and save lives.

X-Men were surprised by the amount of swimmers on a seemly dull and drab windy Wellington day.

Aliens came out to play

Quality did not diminish when a patrol team of two was posted (15/01/11) Jason Reid (PC); producing an audit score of 44/52 in choppy seas and wind gusts, Aliens continued to patrol proactively. Visits from a hen’s party and people promoting vitamin drinks helped to ignite a little ray of sunshine to a wind swept but incident free day.

A-Team brought its A-game

A patrol of five was posted on an overcast day (09/01/11) in the Capital; Wayne Wickens (PC). Oriental Bay beach saw visitors using it for various activities; Photos with no pants, Baptism and even a movie shot for a youth group.

The patrol continued its proactive approach which proved to be useful in reducing its response time affecting a rescue. The victim swimming to the platform got into trouble but for early intervention by lifeguard Henry Williams. The victim was tracked and rescued within seconds; although embarrassed, the victim was glad for lifeguard assistance.

WW II stood in force

A patrol of four was posted at O'Bay (08/01/11); Wayne Wickens (PC). The beach was filled with Football fans watching a Football tournament which lasted the whole day. Beach goers were pressed for choice to swim or to watch the Football. The patrol remained proactive and vigilant ending an incident free patrol.

Open patrols

Day Two of the Year

02/01/11 saw three post a patrol. The sun shone with moderate northwesterlies predicting a busy beach of sun seekers. A drunk individual decided to enter the water under strong advice not to by lifeguards. Lifeguards coaxed him back to shore as Police were called to have him arrested for drinking on an alcohol free beach.

The day ended with 180 visitors during peak time.

New Years Day

01/01/11 was overcast and warm; well wishers came to warm on the beach at O'Bay, a patrol of three was posted. New kids to O'Bay were trying climb on to the fountain but were quickly set right. The wind did pick up but didn't prevent beach users from mooching and mucking about. We were able to pitch the tent and fly the flags of Maranui in a totally incident free patrol.

Wild and fresh in the Capital

Foul Weather Patrol!!! Tuesday 28th December 2010, three turned up to brave an easing storm to post a Foul weather patrol; this was an all PC affair. Lots of debris littered O'Bay which marred beach goers as the wind eased and the sun shone briefly. TV3 were filming a piece about the weather and catching the flags in the background. A few braved the elements to swim to the platform and back. Access to the Rotunda proved to be a great refuge from the wind.

Another windy day on O' Bay

Monday 27th December 2010 was another windy day but it didn't deter beach goers therefore didn't deter Maranui. We posted a patrol of three which proved to be incident free; it was a time for Rookie Lifeguard Barry McGuinness to work on his Rookie booklet.

The rescue that Maranui performed on 18th December by Peter Clark saw the Aunt of the victim turn up to wish us a merry christmas and happy new year. She said that the victim was doing well and commended Maranui on its discretion but rapid response. The victim was very embarrassed but happy at achieving the swim to the platform.

Boxing Day Patrol

Six turned up to patrol a windy, cloudy Boxing Day 26th December 2010. A routine beach sweep revealed two dead Blue penguins. DOC was notified and came to collect the carcasses; DOC said Oriental Bay can expect more carcasses washing up due to El Nina weather conditions forcing penguins to search further afield for food. The day was plagued by visitors clearing their heads by going for a Boxing day dip and visitors from overseas wanting to be photographed with Surf Lifeguards.

Patrolling on Oriental Bay

X-Men showing the way
Congratulations to the X-Men Patrol team; aided by an increasingly hot day on Sat 18th December; the Team was audited producing a high score 60/61. Later on duty, Peter Clark performed a board rescue rescuing a teenager who was suffering from exhaustion, first for the season. With all this excitement it seemed fitting that a visit from the Red Bull girls giving out free Red Bull to cool matters down capped off a patrol to remember.

Angels II tough it out
Conditions for patrol had deteriorated on Sunday 19th December to rain and strong Northerlies; Paula Wood (PC) was able to send lifeguards home and post a smaller team.  To help pass the time between brave swimmers in the water, Dominion Post interviewed Angel II while huddled up out of the elements in a bus shelter. All were in good spirits as photos were taken finishing an incident free patrol.
