We encourage all of our lifeguards to participate in surf sports. Carnivals are held throughout the summer culminating in the Nationals in March each year. This is a great opportunity to compete against other clubs in NZ and participate in the camaraderie generated by surf sports. By providing physical goals and challenges we build confidence on many levels as well as strenghtening their lifeguarding skills. This benefits the individual as well as the club.
Events span the range of rescue skills and test competitors' strength, fitness and agility in swimming, running, paddling a surf ski, board or canoe.
IRB racing is also an increasing popular part of our sport. (n.b. IRB's are for those lifeguards who have completed the Maranui graduate lifeguard programme). Team events such as tube and board rescue also feature on the programme.
Training Programme for U16 - U19.
Particular emphasis will be placed on technique and general fitness. These sessions may be run in the harbour so paddling technique can be improved. When the season begins in November a further session will be held on a Wednesday evening (club night) as well as Sunday after/during the older Junior Surf session. Further training will be introduced as we approach the Nationals in March with details to be firmed up closer to the time.
Participation during the winter each Sunday is optional. IRB training runs throughout the winter and the younger lifeguards are encouraged to come down to the club and utilise the equipment and the skills of the older Lifeguards to hone their skills and their fitness.
